The 240th regular meeting of Fuchu Toastmasters club was held on the 5th of December. Today, a new member has joined our club! Before the meeting, we held an induction ceremony and we greeted a new member D-san. We celebrated his success in Fuchu Toastmasters club.
■ Today’s word： “shine at”
At the beginning of the meeting, one of participants announces “today’s word”. Speakers can build up practical vocabulary by trying to use today’s word in their speeches. “Shine at” means “be good at”.
He shines at tennis.
She shines at math.
She shines at cooking.
We can use like that.
■ Prepared Speeches
A prepared speech is made based on the speech manual written by Toastmasters International. Speakers have to make a speech along purposes in the manual such as “logical speech” and “effective way of speech”. The manual gives us specific advice. Achieving the purposes step by step allows you to improve your speaking skill.
[1st Speaker: TM RD] Speech Title: Call A Spade A Spade
TM RD-san gave his first speech in our club. He started with “The other day, Government announced 55 trillion Yen on an economic stimulus package.” He shared about his ideas about one of our society problems. “Give a man a fish you feed him for a day, but teach a man to fish and he will eat for a life time.” His speech inspired us.
[2nd Speaker: SM] Speech Title: My Home Town
TM SM-san’s speech was an Ice Breaker speech. He introduced about himself. He was born in Chiba prefecture. Tokyo Disney Resort, Tokyo German Village and LaLaport Tokyo placed in Chiba prefecture. His sentence made us smile. He wants to improve his English public speech. We hopes he would enjoy our club’s activities.
[3rd Speaker: TM] Speech Title: Where There’s A Will, There’s A Way
TM TM-san has many years of experience in our club. She shared her experiences in the club. “To make mistakes in front of people is nothing bad. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. This is the only way to improve yourself.” Many of us were encouraged by her speech. Thank you!
■ Table Topics Session
Today’s table topics’ master is TM KT-san. His questions for the day were very unique. He showed one picture and the speakers have to make and speak a story inspired by it. A TV program “IPPON-GRAMPRI” inspires this. In our club, this is the first try. Every speaker’s answer speech was very fun.
■ Evaluation session
In the evaluation session, evaluators previously assigned describe good points and area for an improvement and encourage speakers to make more effective speeches. Evaluators have to listen to the speech carefully and are qualified the ability to analyze good points and area for an improvement quickly. Even if you are not evaluator, evaluator-like- listening is a good training to be a good speaker.
■ Award session
The best speaker of each session, prepared speech, table topics and evaluation, is chosen by all participants voting and is awarded for his/her best speech. Congratulations!
