On July 5, Fuchu Toastmasters Club held its 350th meeting. We had both in-person and online participants, and we were happy to welcome several guests. It was a meeting full of learning, laughter, and encouragement.

Prepared Speech 1: Make Your Change Visible

The first speaker, H.S., gave a speech about positive thinking.

One message was especially memorable:

“If you decide to change, change in a way that everyone can see.”

Small changes are important, but big and visible changes can inspire other people. His speech reminded us that our attitude can influence those around us.

Prepared Speech 2: The Secret to Learning a Second Language

The second speaker, M.S., talked about second language learning.

He explained that many people believe talent is the key to learning a language. However, research shows that motivation is often more important. He also shared his experience of teaching Japanese to English speakers. Through teaching, he discovered new things about his own language.

Another important message was that making mistakes is a natural part of learning. Instead of being afraid of mistakes, we should keep speaking and keep trying. After the speech, the audience joined an active Question and Answer session, which was part of the project.

Table Topics

The Table Topics session was about rainy days and shaved ice.

One speaker, R.N., made everyone laugh by saying,

“Shaved ice looks different because of the colors, but I think they all taste the same!”

It was a funny and confident answer, and everyone enjoyed it.

「見える変化」が人を動かす ～7月5日 英語例会レポート～

7月5日（日）、府中トーストマスターズクラブでは第350回英語例会を開催しました。今回も会場とオンラインのハイブリッド形式で、多くのメンバーとゲストを迎え、笑いあり、学びありの充実した例会となりました。

準備スピーチ① 「変化は、誰の目にも見える形で」

最初の準備スピーチでは、H.S.さんが「Focus on the Positive」プロジェクトに取り組みました。

スピーチで特に印象的だったのは、

「変わるなら、誰の目にも見えるくらい変わろう」

というメッセージです。

私たちは「少しずつ成長しよう」と考えがちですが、小さな変化は本人しか気づかないこともあります。一方で、周囲が思わず「最近変わりましたね」と感じるほどの変化は、人に良い影響を与え、自分自身の自信にもつながります。

前向きな考え方を実践することの大切さを、ユーモアも交えながら伝えてくれたスピーチでした。

準備スピーチ② 「第二言語習得の秘訣」

続いてのM.S.さんのスピーチは、「The Secret to Learning a Second Language」。

「語学学習を続けられる人と、途中であきらめてしまう人の違いは何か？」という問いから始まり、第二言語習得（SLA）の研究をもとに、「才能や記憶力以上に重要なのはモチベーションである」という考えを紹介しました。さらに、日本語を英語話者に教えた経験から、「〜たい」と「〜たがる」の違いを説明しようとして初めて母語の奥深さに気づいたエピソードや、「間違いは失敗ではなく、学習が進んでいる証拠である」という研究結果を紹介し、聴衆に勇気を与える内容となりました。

このスピーチは「Question and Answer Session」プロジェクトとして実施され、スピーチ後には参加者からの質問を受けながら、内容をさらに深める質疑応答も行われました。単に話して終わるだけではなく、聴衆との双方向のやり取りによって理解を深める、トーストマスターズならではの学びの時間となりました。

テーブルトピックスは「雨」と「かき氷」

即興スピーチのテーブルトピックスでは、「雨にまつわる思い出」や「好きなかき氷の味」など、この季節らしいテーマが出題されました。

中でも印象的だったのは、R.N.さんのスピーチです。

「かき氷は見た目こそ色が違うけれど、結局みんな同じ味だと思っています。」

と堂々と言い切るユーモラスな切り口に、会場は大きな笑いに包まれました。思わず「本当にそうなのかな？」と考えたくなる、即興ならではの楽しいスピーチでした。

「失敗しても大丈夫」が成長につながる

今回の例会では、「目に見える変化を目指すこと」と、「間違いを恐れず挑戦すること」という、一見異なる二つのテーマが、不思議なくらい共通したメッセージとして感じられました。

府中トーストマスターズクラブのモットーは、

“Let’s practice! It’s OK to make many mistakes!”

です。失敗を恐れず挑戦し続けることで、気が付けば以前の自分とは見違えるほど成長している――そんなことを改めて実感できる例会となりました。
