The 262nd Regular Meeting in English（2022/11/06）

■ Today’s word: pleasant

 “At the beginning of the meeting, one member announces “today’s word”. Speakers can build up practical vocabulary by trying to use today’s word in their speeches.

Today’s word is “pleasant” defined as happy and comfortable in a dictionary.

We can use this word like we will enjoy pleasant speeches in our club meeting.

 A prepared speech is made based on the speech manual written by toast masters international. Speakers have to make a speech along purposes in the manual such as “logical speech” and “effective way of speech”. The manual gives us specific advices.  Achieving the purposes step by step allows you to improve your speaking skill.

 (TM N-san) Title:  Moving forward with diversity and inclusion.. 

 N-san told us about importance of diversity and inclusion. She started working in Japan -based company where she was required to act like a woman rather like a business person since she was only female staff in the office. She felt stressed out there. After changing jobs to foreign-based company, her boss and associates listen to her and respect her. She learned importance of diversity and inclusion through that experience.

 

  (TM A-san) Title: The difference between the Japanese name and the impression given by the name.

There are words that are interpreted differently by people. Do you know Musenmai(無洗米) is unwashed rice or washed rice?  He told couple of such words. When he went on a trip with a friend of him to the top of a mountain where visitors can see a long horizon line over the sea. The sign board said you can see the roundness of the earth. The friend found the saying right. But he thought it was wrong because skyline looked straight. The impressions given by the name are different for each other.

He talked about major league baseball big star player, Otani Shohei

He is not only a great baseball player but also has consideration to others. He always respects other team members as well as his own team members.

When a broken peace of bat nearly hit him, he picked up the peace, then give it to the batter and smiled to him. Such his gentlemanly behavior attracted audience in the stadium.

■ Table Topics session

Table Topics is impromptu speech. A facilitator for Table Topics gives a title of speeches and assigns a speaker.　The speaker have to organize his/her idea and make a two-minute-speech on the spot. Quick response ability can be improved through the Table Topics speech.

■ Evaluation session

 In the evaluation session, evaluators previously assigned describe good points and area for an improvement and encourage speakers to make more effective speeches. Evaluators have to listen to the speech carefully and are qualified the ability to analyze good points and area for an improvement quickly. Even if you are not evaluator, evaluator-like- listening is a good training to be a good speaker.
